Stroke charity appoint student Jess on 15 week placement

Think Ahead Stroke has appointed student social worker Jess Burton on a 15 week, full-time stroke support placement.

Jess, 23, is currently studying a master’s degree in Social Work at Edge Hill University.

Now living in Atherton, Wigan, Jess should become a familiar face in the community as she helps to support and advise the many stroke survivors and carers who rely on Think Ahead Stroke.

Just a week into her role and Jess is already enjoying the experience, she said: “I am studying social work because I really wanted to make a difference to people’s lives, so Think Ahead Stroke felt like the perfect place to learn and help people.

“This is my first time working with stroke survivors, and I’ve already realised that a lot of my role here is about helping empower people to be as independent as possible.”

Think Ahead Stroke’s Executive Manager Carol Sankey comments: “I’m so pleased Jess has joined the team as there is always so much to do.

“As well as working with stroke survivors with complex support needs, Jess will also be part of our ‘frontline’ as a first point of contact and will help coordinate how we work with other local health and support agencies.”

Did Jess always want to be a social worker? “I did, but I wanted to gain some life experience first. My first degree was in Politics and Sociology but looking at Parliament at the moment I think I have made the right choice with social work!”

Everyone at Think Ahead Stroke agrees 100%!
