Who we are

Think Ahead is a charity that aims to give back the hope and self-respect that stroke so often takes away. Whether it’s a listening ear or practical guidance, we support stroke survivors and those who care for them in rebuilding their lives after stroke – regardless of where they are in the stroke journey.

From events and activities to information and training, Think Ahead provides invaluable advice, support and friendship to help those recovering from stroke. Our services aim to assist survivors in regaining some of the confidence and abilities they may have lost.

Set up in 2000 by a group of stroke survivors and carers, Think Ahead now has more than 500 members and has grown to act as a much-needed voice for stroke across Wigan, Leigh and Greater Manchester. We also partner with other organisations in promoting healthy lifestyles and stroke awareness in our local community and beyond.

Our mission

We aim to be a voice for stroke. We will provide support, information, awareness and training to improve quality of life for stroke survivors and those who care for them.

  • By 2020 stroke survivors, carers, the public and professionals will have a greater awareness of stroke and the support that Think Ahead can provide.
  • On an on-going basis Think Ahead will provide practical, physical and emotional support to stroke survivors and those who care for them.
  • Think Ahead will further develop our advice and advocacy service for stroke survivors and those who care for them, so that it is there when they need it, to support their voice to be listened to and heard.
  • On a monthly basis, we will provide up-to-date information on stroke and Think Ahead to stroke survivors, carers, professionals and the public.
  • Each year, we will ensure that Think Ahead is financially viable, sustainable, well managed and governed.
  • Over the next five years, Think Ahead will work with other professionals and partner organisations to deliver the stroke care pathway and provide a more informed and co-ordinated experience of care for stroke survivors and those who care for them.
  • Think Ahead will further develop and provide education and training for stroke survivors, carers, professionals and other agencies to ensure they are aware of the stroke survivor’s experience, have current knowledge and are aware of the charity’s objectives.
