The Think Ahead Stroke 2020 calendar depicting twelve paintings, drawings and sketches from our weekly art class has been revealed by the charity.

This year’s calendar is particularly special as it marks Think Ahead’s 20th year of working with stroke survivors and carers across Wigan.

The new calendar contains twelve pieces of artwork carefully selected from six stroke survivors, all of which were created in our fortnightly art class, held every other Friday morning at 10.30am.

Contributing artists include Lynn Hardman, Dennis Prescott, Marjorie Cassidy, Dorothy Grundy, Christine Graham and Neville Andrews.

Arty Dennis Prescott, who provides May, August and October says: “I experienced my first stroke in 2014, whilst on my way to do my first love at the time: fishing. As a result I had to give up fishing, which was really hard at the time.

“I first went down to the art class on a recommendation from a friend, and I haven’t looked back. The class keeps my brain going, helps me make new friends and stops me from sitting at home and doing nothing.

“My favourite piece in the calendar is October’s ‘The Light of the Sea’ because it reminds me of one of the stained-glass windows at St Mary’s Church in Standish.”

And what’s Dennis up to at Christmas? “I’m really looking forward to attending the art class’ Christmas party and the Think Ahead Christmas lunch – particularly the festive singing by local school children.”

Charity executive manager Carol Sankey is delighted with the calendar: “Thanks to everyone who has contributed artwork – and an extra special thank you to Janet Bilsbury who leads our art class so brilliantly each week.

“2020 promises to be a special year of 20th birthday celebrations for Think Ahead Stroke, and the calendar is a great way to kick things off. Merry Christmas all!”
